Musicians, Singers, Songwriters, Bands, Managers, Industry Entrepreneurs!
The successful YOUR CAREER IN MUSIC music biz program I teach in the Greater Vancouver region is held at Douglas College in New Westminster. This affordable course is open to anyone and jam packed with information and insights for anyone who is involved in, or has intentions of getting involved in, a pursuit in the music industry. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to learn what it takes to successfully pursue a career and prosper in the music business.
Your Career In Music is an in-depth program I designed to teach you how to strategize your career and know when to take the appropriate steps. You will learn about who does what in the industry and how to establish and maintain strong working relationships, about contracts and protecting your interests, how to approach recording and music video projects with smarts, the ins and outs of publishing and copyright, important secrets to saving time and money, the many ways to make money and maximize your income, the digital scene and marketing in the digital age, gigging, touring, promotion and much, much more. Plus, you’ll get the opportunity to have your music or promo material critiqued.
Cost of the course is only about $10.00 per hour. A special group rate schedule applies for duos/bands/ensembles(a group’s manager may also attend as a member), making it even cheaper per person to attend. Parents of young talents are also encouraged to attend (free with an under-18 registrant).

Hi Graham,
I’m still working out of town and am interested in taking it online. Is that option available yet? Thanks
G Swan
Hi George:
Not at this time. I’ve thought about it. But, you know, there’s nothing quite like connecting and working with people in person, which I really like to do. It provides students an opportunity to bring up issues and interests particular to them during or after class that often can’t be addressed in quite the same way via a Web-based format. Not to say it won’t happen, though. You’re not the first to ask for it and if more people let me know it’s something they’d sign up for I will seriously consider it.

Hello Graham, I am interested in the ‘YOUR CAREER IN MUSIC’ course that you are offering at Douglas College in January 2011, although it doesn’t say anywhere h0w many classes there will be every week (unless I missed it?). Is there only one session?
Second, will this class be focusing on mostly online marketing of music for artists and bands or would this course be beneficial for a songwriter/publisher who is interested only in pitching to other publishers and artists?
Finally, do you cover information about copyright laws, publishing, licensing etc. in the US as well as Canada?
Thank you kindly for you time,
Julie W.
Hi Julie:
The course consists of 12 classes, once a week on Wednesday evenings, beginning January 12, 2011.
The main focus is not online marketing, although promotion and marketing via the Web is one of the many components. This course is definitely relevant to songwriters. Publishing and publishers, licensing, contracts, copyright and so forth are part of the agenda, the majority of which is not focused particularly on Canada.
This course is very beneficial on many levels to anyone who is planning on shopping material to industry, not only in terms of specifics to do with one or another particular segment of the industry but regarding more general matters, such as getting a reality check on your material and the market, how to determine when it makes sense to approach industry members and how to do it, how to prepare oneself for initial discussions and subsequent deal negotiations, what to look out for in various types of contracts, and so on. All this with the objective of best protecting your interests, utilizing your time, money and effort most effectively, and ultimately maximizing your earnings potential.
I hope this helps.
If you would like to discuss the program more with me in terms of how it might fit your needs please email me at graham@grahamway.ca and if you like we can set up a time to talk.
Best regards,
Graham
Thank you Graham,
I will probably give you a call tomorrow to set up a time to talk, but so far, sounds like something I would be interested in.
Take care, have a great evening.
Julie W.
Hi! I am still in High School, would I be able to take this course?
Katerina
Hi Katerina:
Yes, the course is open to teens. Each semester we’ve run the course there’s been at least one or two participating. Your parent or guardian is also able to attend the classes as well for no extra charge. Let me know if you need any more information.

DUSTIN
Hi Dustin:
The course won’t be running again until the Fall, so this would indeed be an opportune time to take it if advancing your career sooner than later is a priority for you. As far as cost is concerned, your dilemma is a common one in the music community—artists in particular are always having to come to terms with where to spend their limited cash at any particular time. That said, there is probably no more important investment an artist or writer can make early on in their career pursuit than in gaining a strong knowledge base about the business. Success flows from the making of wise and timely career decisions, and any artist/writer will undoubtedly end up saving way more than they spend on this course if they apply even a fraction of what they learn from it. I should add that I also make myself available at the end of each class whenever possible to field questions one-on-one from students who come to me with a matter or concern particular to their situation that they need some guidance on. I’ll email you privately so that we can set up a time to talk about your situation if you wish.
definately interested in the course……how long does it take, and what would be a couple basics things we’d be going over?
Hi Cory:
It’s 12 weeks, consisting of one 3-hour evening class per week. This is a non-credit program, with no exam and no homework of the traditional sort but you’ll have lots to take home from each class to mull over, absorb and start applying to your situation. I’ll send you an overview of the course content to your private email address.
Hi Graham, I am interested in your course for a family member however he will be out of town for 3 lessons, can he get the info on the sessions he misses or sit in on those particular lessons at a future date? Thanks, Kris
Hi Kris:
Yes, he can be accommodated. I will email you more information about the options available to him.
Hey Graham, I am very interested in this course however cant do it on the 19th, will there be another time to sign up at the beginning? This seems like an invaluable course.
Thanks
Hi Adam:
It will run again in the Fall, starting around the end of September.
Thanks for your interest and I hope to meet you then.
